The World of Maps: A History of Cartography 25355A

Mapping the world is one of humanity's most enduring passions, something humans have done with varying degrees of success for over thousands of years: from aboriginal rock carvings, to Native Americans celestial charts, to modern-day satellite maps. Maps illustrate the many ways in which human cultures interpret spatial relationships--their place in the world. This course tells the fascinating story of geographic discovery, scientific invention and the art and technique of map making.

"The World of Maps" is a concise introduction to the history of cartography and charts the intimate links between maps and history from antiquity to the present day. Organized chronologically with a brief introduction that places the maps in their historical context, each lecture features key cartographic innovators and maps of exceptional artistic or historical significance, such as the 1507 Waldseemuller map, the first to use the name America.
