This poem is the oldest surviving work of world literature; it is the epic tale of the king of Uruk, a city in ancient Sumer, and of his beloved friend, Enkidu, a child of the wilderness. Together they battle gods and monsters; Gilgamesh ultimately travels to the Land of the Dead to find they key to immortality. It is a collection of episodes some of which date to two thousand years before Homer. Their world is baffling, at once archaic and timeless. Friendship, love and loss, man's relation to the gods, the value of human life - if any: GILGAMESH probes these issues which even now we struggle to understand.
