Biblical Women in Western Art 15345A
Women have played an outsized, but often forgotten, role in the Judeo-Christian Biblical tradition. These four lectures, richly illustratd with art from the 3rd through the 21st centuries, will tell the stories of women of the Old and New Testaments who were the instruments of their religions founding or survival, matriarchs of their families, heroines of their people, or falsely accused of being immoral.
Though not in the Bible, in the early days of the new religion, Christian women suffered for refusing to give up their faith, and their bravery and agonies will be told using vibrant artworks that have endured through centuries.
In addition to the tales of the women who are the subject of these talks, there will also be comments on the painting used to tell the stories, as well as brief, and often entertaining, biographical sketches of the artists who created them.
